This is working for linux and windows as well with standard library

paths = ['a/b/c/', 'a/b/c', '\\a\\b\\c', '\\a\\b\\c\\', 'a\\b\\c',
         'a/b/../../a/b/c/', 'a/b/../../a/b/c']

def path_leaf(path):
    return path.strip('/').strip('\\').split('/')[-1].split('\\')[-1]
